Double Identity

Margret Peterson Haddix

Our book was Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix.  The story takes place in Sanderfield, Illinois. The story starts out as Bethany's parents are acting strange and unlike themselves, and then, all the sudden, they decide to drive halfway across the country and then leave her at her Aunt Myrlie's house, even though she’s never met or heard of her before. She had always been told that she had no relatives.

As the story progresses her aunt acts strange too and some of the people almost mistake her for someone they apparently knew a long time ago. So Bethany calls her dad to talk to him about what is going on,but his number is disconnected and so is Bethany's cell phone, then after that they call the phone operator to ask for her dad's number, but it miraculously isn't listed. Bethany starts to worry about what might've happened to her parents and why they apparently never existed according to the operator.

Later on Myrlie’s daughter Joss visits them from St. Louis. While Joss is there, Bethany’s mom calls and starts to call Bethany by the name of Elizabeth. She is sounding very distressed and talks about how she had a awful dream where something terrible happens at a place called Sinclair Mountian, and then her dad gets on the line and says that Aunt Myrlie should tell Bethany about her dead sister who died when she was thirteen before Bethany was born. She died in a car accident and Bethanys mother thinks it was all her fault even though they will never know whose fault it was. It was either Bethanys mom or the person in the other car. They all watch videos about Elizabeth and Joss playing together as little kids. They had dreams of being professionals in gymnastics and going to the 1992 Olympics, but Elizabeth died before then. Then Aunt Myrlie gets a package in the mail from Bethany's father with no return address, so they are still wondering where Bethanys dad went after they left Bethany at her supposed aunt's house. The package contains $10,000 and 4 different birth certificates of Bethany. The last names are all different, and they were all from different towns. Bethany was the only thing held constant as the first name of all these children.

A few days later, her mom calls again and starts talking like she is talking to her dead daughter, Elizabeth. She is, once again, talking about the day that Elizabeth died and said that she hoped she wasn't in too much pain because she thought that she was in the hospital. Then she gets off topic and says "Oh, Elizabeth, its simple. We'll make a copy of you, like a clone" and Bethany faints and runs out into town. She is running and she falls, then Joss catches up with her and a strange, unmarked car pulls up and asked tehm if they need some help. Strange thing is, they have never met him, but he knows there names... he drives away, however, when a cop car pulls up to help them.

Our opinion is that we like how the author wrote it so that it suspenceful . You can't just stop at the end of a chapter, you have to keep reading it to find out what happens.

To prove our opinion, we have chosen a passage from the book that takes place at the end of chapter 22.

"Um, Mom, did you see this?" Joss asks.

"What?" Myrlie asks, distracted.

Joss reaches into the envelope and pulls out something wrapped in more paper. This paper, though, only reads, "In case Bethany needs anything."

Joss pulls the paper off, revealing two thick wads of more paper.

Cash.

Hundred-dollar bills.
